Founded by the Vikings in 914 A.D., the city of Waterford, in Waterford County, is the oldest on the Emerald Island and the most prominent in the Southeast Region of the country. It is home to approximately 108,000 people who enjoy a cultural array of museums, art galleries and theatres in particular the Theatre Royal in Waterford City. The River Suir runs through Waterford and the rich maritime history of Waterford has made it one of the most prominent ports in the region.

It is a must-see for those who love parades, music, arts and family fun. Those visiting in 2011 will want to be sure and check out the Tall Ships Festival which drew an estimated 450,000 people in 2005 and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser when it returns in 2011. 

Getting around Waterford is easy via excellent access routes by rail and bus that connects Waterford to Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Rosslare. Visitors will find that once they make that initial trip to Waterford, they will be eager to return to a holiday home in the South East region of Ireland.
