Places to visit:Emo VillageThe estate village of Emo is a small unspoilt rural village, located just 0.5 kilometers from us. There you can visit Emo Court and gardens which are open to the public and free of charge during daylight hours and comprises several hundreds of acres of woodlands, beautiful walks and gardens. There is a wide range of trees, some at least a couple of hundred years old, a lake with fish, swans, ducks etc and a wide variety of flora and fauna. After your walk, you can visit the tea-rooms for some home made goodies. Local Architecture and BuildingsSituated in the very heart of Ireland, Laois is a hidden gem steeped in history and folklore. Why not journey through this magical midland county where we can delve into the secrets of past generations and uncover a myriad of historical treasures. Laois has a wealth of heritage sites and places of historic interest, reflecting a history of human settlement dating back thousands of years. From the Bronze Age to the stately architecture of James Gandon, the county is replete with splendid historical treasures - an Aladdin's Cave for heritage enthusiasts. Our most notable is The Rock of Dunamaise dating back to 2000B.C. In the local area, historical and architectural interests include Emo Court 1790, Coolbanagher Church and The Gandon Inn, all designed by the renowned architect James Gandon who also designed The Four Courts and Custom House in Dublin. Our village church is Gothic in style and houses a life size Carrera marble statue of Lady Portarlington (of Emo Court), almost a dozen beautiful old stained glass windows and an adjoining cemetery (graveyard) with some fine examples of the famous Celtic Cross. GardensIf you like to spend your break visiting gardens and historic buildings Laois has plenty to offer. The county is home to several prestigious gardens and stately homes. There are also many heritage sites. The gardens of Laois include MuseumsMuseums to visit in the county include Abbeyleix Heritage House (Titanic connections), the Mountmellick Lace collection (Huguenot in origin), Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum, the unique Fly Fishing & Game Museum in Attanagh and the Steam Museum in Stradbally. The historic museum at the Rock of Dunamaise with the remains of an Iron Age ring fort is a sight not to be missed. Driving directionsAccess by Car:Directions from Dublin:Travel approximately 70km on the M7, take exit 15 towards Mountmellick and Portarlington and drive into Emo village which is located approximatly 3 kms from motorway exit. Turn left at the Gate House pub which is at the centre of Emo village and continue driving until you reach a T junction where you turn left. Hillview self catering accommodation is sign posted and is the first house on the left. Directions from Wexford:Watch for signs to Enniscorthy, Carlow to Portlaoise. In Portlaoise, look for signs for 'Dublin' and M7. Follow this road out of town - you will come to several 'round-abouts'. Watch for sign for R445 and R419 (Portarlington road) Directions from Shannon:Follow signs for Limerick, watching for signs to Dublin. Stay on N7 through, Nenagh, Rosrcrea and on to Portlaoise and the 'M7'. Take 'EXIT 16' signposted for Mountmellick/Portarlington. Follow signs around various round-abouts for Mountmellick/Emo and 'R422'. In village of Emo ( at The Gate House' turn left, straight on to 'T' Junction and turn left. Hillview Self Catering is on the left before the church (500m) Directions from Cork:Follow signs for Fermoy to Abbeyleix and on towards Portlaoise. Take the M7 signposted Dublin. Take 'EXIT 16' signposted for Mountmellick/Portarlington. Follow signs around various round-abouts for Mountmellick/Emo and 'R422'.
