If being outdoors appeals to you then this the perfect base. It is a fantastic location for angling on the shores of Lough Corrib and close to the Black River(boats and ghillie are available for hire locally). Ballycurrin Bay is famous for its wild brown trout and coarse fishing for pike and perch is also enjoyed. Wildlife enthusiasts have a wide variety of flora and fauna to see including pine martens, kingfisher, mute swan nesting site and bee orchids. Golf is available in nearby Ballinrobe. Local historical interests include Ross Abbey, Killursa and Moyne monastic sites, Ballycurrin Lighthouse, local ringforts, Cong and Inchagoill( which can be visited by boat from Ashford Castle). It is also an ideal base for touring the surrounding countryside e.g Connemara with its wonderful National Park, Westport, Croagh Patrick, and the Burren. However if the countryside is getting too much, Galway city is only 30kms away. Galway has many shops, art galleries, restaurants, and wonderful traditional music in the many pubs. It hosts the Arts Festival and Racing Festival during the last two weeks of July and early August. While busy all year round the atmoshpere during these two festivals is unique.

Driving Directions From Galway - take the N84 road. Turn left in Headford at the traffic lights at Varleys Pub. Take the second right hand turn(1.9miles/3km) at the signpost for Ballycurrin Lighthouse. Take the fifth byroad on the left (2.9miles/4.6km). There is a sign at the top of the road for Heron's Rest. Heron's Rest is the fifth house.
